I'm gonna have to show my niece the gurning pictures. Recently, her favorite thing to do is make stupid faces at each other and see who laughs first, so she'll definitely get a kick out of this.
One morning I was awakened by "gobble-gobble", which was a sound I'd never heard near my house before. WTF I said to myself till I remembered a friend who lives a few blocks away saying she was stopped for a minute as a mother turkey was leading the babies across the street in front of her car the day before. Besides not wanting to kill birbs, she was taken aback by the mother's glare at her and deemed it safer for everyone.
Neither of us has seen or heard any since so maybe Ma and the kids lost her GPS, or else had told the kids she was turning this flock right around and going home.
We've had some turkeys hang out in the area for a bit and move on. I keep hoping they'll return with babies. Our four are all two-year-old siblings; a group of three hens and our jake (young male) who used to roost in the tree in front of our house. Now the hens have taken over and he's relegated to a tree out back. They all use our roof as a springboard to their roosts. It's pretty great, tbh.
Those are all indeed primo headlines you've collected. My brother will be most amused by the one printed nearest his house.
If any Canadian writer hasn't used that sort of phrasing involving the godwits, I will be disappointed. But I believe in our maple-covered brethren.
Elephants are smart and social. I remember seeing that video when it happened.
I came across the Gurning Contest before there was any sort of internet and you had to hope your daily newspaper would run a few photos to fill space or it would be the obligatory goofy ending to your local TV news.
If this was the only birb named for Wilson (yes, an extremely white man), I'd wonder if he had been a dancing master. But now that I've looked them up, I like them because the females are bigger, more colorful, and make the males raise the chicks while they go off to find more men. I say you go girls.
Henry is gorgeous and his fashion game is top-tier. 11/10 no notes.
The men's comments video was too true and had great filter use. 12/10 no notes.
Human interest, eye-catching photos, all pulled off the wire services -- perfect filler for those dead spots in the layout. Same with the TV news; something to end the late newscast with a laugh, taken from stock footage provided by whoever.

Maybe she'll travel to compete one day! I read that people come from all over to pull their best faces.
I’m cry-laughing through most of this issue! How much do we love Carl?? A lot like your turkeys.
All FOUR were on our front porch this morning!

I really wish we could post photos to Substack because one of them hopped onto Dan's car yesterday, too.
Another fun fact about our Safari Park elephants? Researchers at UCSD are studying their breast milk! https://today.ucsd.edu/story/jumbo-undertaking-elephant-milk-under-the-microscope#:~:text=Lars%20Bode%2C%20Ph.,the%20milk%20composition%20of%20elephants.
Man, I am not surprised that they are doing all sorts of cool stuff there. Thanks for the link!

I love that the Gurning Championships used to make the newspaper. There's something very charming about that.

I’ve been to Hudson’s Bay ❤️
I'll bet it's beautiful! Did you see any Hudsonian godwits?????
No but I did see the northern lights!
